Eric Swalwell, a California congressman, is giving voters a grim outlook on the future of the House if Republicans win control in the midterm elections. He released a new digital advertisement this week that depicts a family traumatized by the arrest of their matriarch for an abortion.
Swalwell, who has served as a Democratic U.S. representative for California’s 15th congressional district since 2013, debuted the ad on “The Reid Out”MSNBC Monday night. Joy Reid explained it. “presents one possible chilling outcome of our post-Roe future.”
The ad shows a family sitting down to dinner. The oldest daughter complains about her parents flirting while she feeds their baby. The couple is seen kissing and police lights are visible behind them.
When the mother answers the door, the cops explain that they’re there to arrest her for “unlawful termination of a pregnancy.”The woman protests, however. “that is my personal business,”She was told bluntly by the cops “That’s for the courts to decide,”Her medical records were subpoenaed, and her doctor was already taken into custody.
Mary is informed by one of the officers: “you will have to submit to a physical examination” — without explaining who exactly will do that examination — her husband steps up to the men to defend her, prompting the two officers to draw their guns on the family, and chaos erupts.
As the infant cries, and the older daughter hides behind her father’s back, the woman is taken away and handcuffed. “We’re just enforcing the law.”A message appears as the action ends. “Elections have consequences,”followed by “Stop Republicans from criminalizing abortion everywhere.”
Rep. Swalwell stated that, even though it may seem exaggerated to Reid, it is a realistic scenario.
“I wanted it to be clear that no police officer wants to be in this position. And for the officer to say ‘Ma’am, we’re just doing our job,’ that’s the horrible position we’re going to put law enforcement in,”He said. “I wish this was an exaggeration, but this is going to be the new reality in MAGA America if we do not win the midterms in both the House and Senate.”
