Dean Henderson ready to force Man Utd loan after losing David de Gea battle

Dean Henderson will reportedly seek a January loan move after losing his battle with David de Gea for Manchester United’s No1 spot.

After replacing De Gea at the end of last season, Henderson was expected to begin the campaign as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice goalkeeper.

However, he was unable to play due to Covid. De Gea saved Mark Noble’s penalty in the United victory over West Ham on Sunday’s Premier League match.

United will face the Hammers in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. However, Tom Heaton is expected to make his debut between the sticks. Henderson has not been able to make it onto the bench this season.

Henderson has only recently returned to training, but he played two full matches for the under-23s against Arsenal and Brighton.

In the meantime, De Gea has been in inspired form – and the situation has left his 24-year-old rival looking for a loan move when the January transfer window opens, according to Central Recorder.

The publication claims Phil Jones will get a chance to play on Wednesday, his first appearance in 20 years.

Even though Jones has had a string of injuries, United boss Solskjaer is sticking by him. Jones was last seen in action in January 2020 in Tranmere’s 6-1 FA Cup victory.

Jones had knee surgery in June of that year and didn’t play again until a behind closed doors friendly against Burnley at start to the season.

He has since resumed training with Solskjaer’s first team, and like Henderson made two 90-minute appearances in the under-23s’ games against their Arsenal and Brighton counterparts.

Jones was a Blackburn player who joined United in 2011, winning the Premier League title, FA Cup, and Europa League. He made 224 appearances before sustaining a series injuries starting in 2014.

Sir Alex Ferguson praised Jones after he helped United win the league title again in his final season as manager.

“Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player,” Ferguson said back in 2013.
