How Deacon Phillippe appeared in Never Have I Ever

While there are some new cast members to the Never Have I Ever cast season 3, none have as much name value as Deacon Phillippe. He is the son of Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon.

According to VarietyMindy Kaling, the showrunner, revealed that “she cast Phillippe after her close friend Witherspoon told her that he had an interest in acting.”

“We were breaking the season and there was this role that seemed like it would be perfect for Deacon. He’s obviously so talented and he’s great-looking, and we just thought he would be great and he was excited to come and do it. He’s just such a well-raised kid. He’s so talented, he’s so funny and fit in perfectly with the cast. The cast and the crew loved him and it was special to have him.” – Mindy Kaling, via Variety.

Kaling stated that “He’s such a humble kid and he just wants to learn and he’s been raised by two very successful actors [so] he’s not wary or anything”How to add “He just came in with this open mind and was excited.”

Lang Fisher, Lang Fisher’s fellow showrunner, also said that she was impressed immediately by the young actor upon his first table reading.

“He was great, and we were like ‘Come aboard!’ This is the first thing he has ever done, but he was such a professional. He was just raised like a wonderful young man. He came to set really prepared and he did a great job.” – Lang Fisher, via Variety.

Deacon’s father, Ryan Phillippe, reacted to his son’s big breakthrough in Never Have I Ever season 3 by telling Extra TV, “It’s really exciting. Being a parent is so rewarding to see him at this point in his life where he’s about to launch his music career and he’s doing a bit of acting and going to college. It’s really a lot of fun.”

Kaling suggests that Ava Phillippe joins another project

Interview with Extra TV, Kaling would share how she would like to work with Deacon’s sister, Ava Phillippe on an upcoming project.

While talking about the experience working with Deacon and Kaling, “He’s so funny, so talented… He’s obviously, like, very handsome, and we had a great time with him on set, and he is like his mom where after he wrapped, he sent me a handwritten note, thanking me for being on set…”

“You could just tell Reese is his mom… You’re just like, ‘Oh, you’re a good person… I can’t imagine anyone saying a bad thing about you… You’re one of those.’” – Mindy Kaling, via Extra TV.

The showrunner then added “how”. “Him and his sister are both that way… And so it was just great to have him on set and he was really cute.”

Curious about the comment, Extra TV’s Katie Krause would follow up by asking “You mentioned his sister, so I’m just curious. You put him in ‘Never Have I Ever.’ Could you put Ava in ‘Legally Blonde 3’?”

Kaling replied with her typical [deserved] bravado, “Listen, I think I can do anything, and if that’s something she wanted to do, what a joy to have her in that.”

Let’s hope that in the future, we will be able to see a Kaling/Phillippe connection.
