Netflix surprised subscribers by announcing over the weekend that the lead part of one its most successful shows will be recast. The third season of The Witcher, Henry Cavill’s tenure as Geraltof Rivia will be ended — a role that he fought for as a fan of the games. Liam Hemsworth will assume the role of Geralt in season four.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,”Cavill made the statement in a statement Saturday. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
Chris Hemsworth’s younger brother Liam Hemsworth is best known as Gale Hawthrone from the Hunger Games series. He also starred in Quibi’s original series Most Dangerous Game and is set to appear in Rian Johnson’s new Peacock show Poker Face. Meanwhile, it’s hard not to conflate Cavill’s departure with his recent return as Superman in the post-credits scene of Black Adam.
