Crypto.com, Arena Name For Former Staples Center, Loses $30M In Hack

It’s not been a good year for the Los Angeles Lakers or L.A. Clippers on their home court. Crypto.com has now suffered a more serious blow than just losing a basketball match. They were hacked for an estimated $30 million in bitcoins, ether.

Crypto.com announced Thursday that there was a security breach in its systems. It projects that it will suffer huge losses from the theft of two major cryptocurrencies as well as other digital assets.

The company is best known for its viral commercial featuring Matt Damon. But it rose to prominence when the company spent $700million to rename Los Angeles’ Staples Center into Crypto.com Arena.

According to a statement that the Singapore-based crypto exchange published Thursday on its corporate website, the missing funds were withdrawn out of 483 customer accounts. Blog.

“Unauthorized withdrawals totaled 4,836.26 ETH, 443.93 BTC and approximately US$66,200 in other currencies,”The company stated in the post. All customers were “fully reimbursed”Crypto.com will reimburse any money that was lost due to the hack.

According to the blog, the break-in occurred Monday.

CoinDesk, which is a newsletter about the crypto and blockchain industry, reported that 4,600 ether had been received. “currently being laundered via Tornado Cash — an Etherium Mixer.”

Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek admitted in an interview that around 400 customer accounts had been hacked.

“Given the scale of the business, these numbers are not particularly material and customer funds were not at risk,”Bloomberg was told by the CEO.

However, disgruntled customers posted on social media that they weren’t yet reimbursed. They wondered how the two-factor authentication required for the site was bypassed.

Crypto.com shares have dropped more than 6 percent on hacking news. Crypto.com closed Thursday at 46c a share.
