While their characters Bianca Taylor and Adonis Creed have romantic chemistry, Jordan and Thompson’s playful banter and warm praise for one another have proved the two actors are more like brother and sister. Thompson was proud to be the film’s director. Now she is openly discussing how her new role impacted their dynamic and how he helped further develop her character.
A first-time directing gig could be stressful for any actor, especially if you’re starring in and producing the project. The biggest challenge for an actor is to direct their co-stars. But it was Tessa Thompson directing Michael B. Jordan during production of Creed 3Thompson said that their relationship was not affected by the incident. I thought that it would, but it didn’t. It was fascinating because it made me wonder what it would feel like to be Mike’s scene partner and director. However, Mike felt totally at ease while we did the scene work. It was easy to get back into the character dynamics. Only thing that was different was time. We’d do the scene, and then he would have to go to the monitor sometimes to watch. That was a different feeling. But dynamically, we were just in the pocket of what we’ve been doing.
It’s great to hear that the leading man’s new responsibilities didn’t negatively impact his dynamic with his co-star or affect Bianca and Donnie’s romance. Given that they’ve been working on this franchise for nearly seven years now, the two stars have built up trust amongst themselves. It would be easy to imagine that both stars are happy knowing that each other is there for them on set.
Tessa Thompson prepared for the event ahead of Creed 3She continued to tell the trade that she also appreciates the fact that her work on the franchise was continuing with the third installment. She loves the creative freedom she has, and thanks to her directorial duties, Michael B. Jordan is now a solid part of this process.
In the past, it’s been a lot of work to make sure that she has agency and an arc in the context of these sports films, essentially. I wanted to make sure that she’s not just moving the plot forward, and that she actually has something interesting to do. I usually do that work alongside the writers, which is a great experience. But this time, I could do that more actively with Mike. I had more freedom to improvise during the day than in previous sessions. It felt very different. But it didn’t change the dynamic between these characters.
A true team player director is something to be admired. This sounds like the former Sexiest Man Alive worked well together during filming.
