Focus Features has taken global rights to Jim Archer’s feature directorial debut Charles and Brian.

They will be available domestically and Universal will handle the offshore territories.

The movie follows Brian, a lonely inventor from rural Wales who spends his time building unusual contraptions that rarely work. Brian takes on his largest project, despite his failures. Three days, a washing machine, and various spare parts later, he’s invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and has an obsession with cabbages.

Film4, the producer and co-funder of the film, will continue to have free television rights in the United Kingdom for the film. The National Lottery grant was given by BFI to Archer for the project he directed and edited.

Rupert Majendie wrote and produced the Mr Box Productions scripts for David Earl and Chris Hayward.

EPs are Damian Jones (Absolutely Fabulous The Movie Lady in the Van), Mary Burke (BFI), and Lauren Dark and Ollie madden (Film4)
