Box Office: ‘Ghostbusters Afterlife’ open to $4.5M on Thursday

The scary Sony sequel is expected generate around $27-28million in three days, taking first place at the domestic box-office over other releases “King Richard” from Warner Bros. and A24’s “C’mon C’mon.”

The latest entry into the “Ghostbusters”Franchise follows a new cast, which includes Paul Rudd, McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard. Rudd portrays Gary Grooberson, an avid Ghostbuster fan and amateur parapsychologist. Grace Wolfhard, Wolfhard, Coon make up a new town family with a secret connection the original ghost-busting team. The group works together to overcome the supernatural threat to their town, using some of the Ectomobile’s ghost traps, proton pack, and ghost traps that have been rediscovered. Original Ghostbusters Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd reprise their roles as Winston Zeddermore, Ray Stantz, and Ray Stantz.

Jason Reitman was the son of Ivan Reitman (director), who oversaw the first two. “Ghostbusters”movies in 1984, 1989, and takes over from his father to make the new installment. At the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Reitman toldVarietyHe initially rejected the idea of starting a new direction. “Ghostbusters,”Saying that he was “scared to pick up the proton pack.”

“But that’s what this movie became about,”He concluded. “‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is about a family developing the courage to pick up the proton pack themselves.”

Reitman said that his daughter served as some inspiration for Grace’s character, the main protagonist who loves science and puns.

“I don’t think it’s an accident that I was a kid on the set of ‘Ghostbusters’ and that this is a movie about young people picking up that equipment and seeing how it works,”Reitman spoke. “It’s not an accident that I have a 12-year-old daughter, and that the center of this story is a brilliant 12-year-old girl who is a scientist who uses ghost-busting as a way to stop being an outsider and find a way to be a hero.”
