Boris Johnson news: Romy, the baby of PM, was ‘badly ill from COVID’ and forced him to take refuge during No.10 party crisis

Young school kids are experiencing record-breaking covid case rates

Figures reveal that Covid-19 has reached a record-breaking rate among England’s young schoolchildren.

In the seven days leading up to January 16, 1,935.7 cases were reported per 100,000 five- to nine-year olds. This is an increase week-on-week of 1,372.7.

The rate of under-fives also has increased from 706.9 to 829.7.

According to the most recent surveillance report by the UK Health Security Agency, (UKHSA), this is the highest weekly rate for both age groups since data began being collected in summer 2020.

These figures coincide with early January’s return of primary and nursery school children.

However, there is no indication of a similar increase in secondary school-age children’s rates.

Rates have fallen in all age groups, even for those aged 80+, where they dropped from 641.7 cases per 100 to 432.1 each week.

Although case rates have fallen in all regions of England, they remain high.
