He maintained an optimistic outlook, but he almost ruled out a return to full-fat locking down and warned that crippling restrictions could cause serious damage to people’s livelihoods.

He was praised by Tory MPs who hate lockdowns and said that “lockdowns aren’t free.”

They are a major threat to our mental and physical health, our business, our jobs, and our livelihoods and, most importantly, our children’s life chances.

“So this government does not believe we need to shut down our country again.”
