Blue Beetle Budget and Did it Fail Opening Weekend?

HITC explains Blue Beetle’s budget to audiences who wonder if the film will fail.

The financial success of some blockbusters is gaining more attention, and this applies to superhero movies in particular. Some are feeling fatigued with the genre as of late, but that hasn’t stopped fans from flocking to see Blue Beetle, the latest DC Comics hero movie starring Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña in the titular role. Blue Beetle Budget opened in 2023 on August 18, and the public wants to know if it is a success or flop.

Blue Beetle budget vs DCEU

Blue Beetle was budgeted at $104million.

The movie is the 14th installment of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), so it’s worth comparing how its budget fares against other franchise entries.

Man Of Steel was the first film in DCEU. It had a budget of $225 millions. Bird Of Prey, which cost $85m, had a smaller budget than Blue Beetle.

Justice League was their highest-priced blockbuster at $300 millions.

On the whole, Blue Beetle is one of the more modestly budgeted productions, perhaps approached more cheaply due to general audiences’ unfamiliarity with the character, who is a less known character in comparison to others presented in the DCEU previously.

Did Blue Beetle flop on opening weekend?

Blue Beetle had a successful opening weekend with a box office total of 43 million dollars, of which $25.4 million was from the US.

Nonetheless, this could be considered a flop for DC Studios because it’s their second-worst opening weekend box office performance yet, only beating Wonder Woman 1984, which was released during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When comparing and contrasting with DC’s most recent release, The Flash raked in $55.7 million domestically, beating out Blue Beetle by a significant amount. However, The Flash had a budget estimated between $200–300 million.

Taking this into consideration, the Blue Beetle opening weekend may have brought in less money but the film itself wasn’t half as expensive as The Flash.

The Flash is the 9th best performing movie in the DCEU. Furthermore, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods was produced for $125 millions and grossed $65.5 Million in its first weekend.

Contemplating Blue Beetle’s future, it needs to bring in around $240 million worldwide to be considered a success.

‘I’ve been very blessed’

Xolo recently chatted to Men’s Health about how amazed he’s been with his career opportunities so far.

“I could have never imagined Cobra Kai,” he revealed. “I could have never seen myself in that role. I’ve never seen myself in a superhero freaking role. I’ve been very blessed to have people around me that see things in me that maybe I don’t.”

As for what’s next, he says that he’ll “stay on the lookout,” with hopes of collaborating with more great talent.

Blue Beetle has now been released in cinemas.
