Barbara Ann Teer:

Barbara Ann Teer, an American writer, producer and teacher actress, died at the age 71 in 2008.

In 1968, she founded Harlem’s National Black Theatre, which was the first revenue-generating black theatre in the whole of the US.

Born in Illinois to parents who were educators and community leaders, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in dance education from the University of Illinois.

Then she continued to study ballet in Paris and Berlin, before moving to New York City where she pursued a career as professional dancer.

She performed with many large dance companies and was the first woman to perform on Broadway in 1961, as the dance captain for Kwamina, an award-winning musical.

Following a 1962 knee injury, she was interested in theatre. She had a successful acting career that included performances on Broadway, TV, and other theatre productions.

However, she always hated the lack of representation and negative stereotypes – which drove her to found the National Black Theatre.

It was dedicated to social change in African-American communities. She also created her own method, which was then taught at the school called “TEER: The Technology of Soul”.

It used West African symbols, mythology, and symbolism to celebrate its heritage while avoiding the westernized idea of theatre.
