The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Your Apple AirPods – Keep Them Looking and Sounding Like New

Apple has broken down the proper way to clean your AirPods and what to avoid to ensure you don’t permanently damage them. AirPods can collect a lot of dirt and filth after wearing them frequently and you’ll want to keep them clean for optimal use. Many people may not realize they are cleaning their AirPods wrong.

Importance of Proper Cleaning Techniques for Your AirPods

You’ll want to ensure you include these techniques in your cleaning routine. Here is a breakdown of how to correctly clean your AirPods, according to Apple. Apple recommends using a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If stains need to be removed, it is fine to use a slightly dampened cloth. You will want to make sure the AirPods are dry before putting them back into the charging case.

Cleaning the Speaker Mesh

The speaker mesh will need to be cleaned as well, but this must be done so carefully. The best way to get the gunk out of the speaker mesh is by using a dry cotton swab. You can also use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush to get tough debris out of the mesh.

AVOID THESE CLEANING MISTAKES

Cleaning your AirPods while using the following techniques could destroy them forever and you’ll want to stay clear of them, according to Apple. Some people may get tempted to use alcohol to remove earwax from the speaker mesh due to it being tough to get out. However, it has been recommended by Apple to never use an alcohol wipe on the speaker mesh because it can ruin the material. You should also never run your AirPods directly underwater.

Apple recommends not using sharp or abrasive materials to clean your AirPods. Sharp or abrasive materials could permanently damage the AirPods and cause scratches or rips to the mesh. The charging ports may get debris or dirt inside and tempt you to stick something in it to clean it out. Apple recommends you shouldn’t place anything inside the charging ports because it could risk ruining them. It may be better to use a blow-off air duster to get the charging port clean.
