Ahsoka teases fascinating Star Wars species in a moment many fans missed

Sometimes you just want to watch a series and relax, zone out, not focus too intently. On the other hand, Star Wars fans will find themselves increasingly vigilant when watching franchise offerings, determined to spot an abundance of little details that will reward them and enrich their viewing experience.

The time has come once again for Star Wars enthusiasts to dive into a galaxy far, far away, this time with the beloved titular character in Ahsoka. Created and written by Dave Filoni, the mini-series has been a long time coming, and Rosario Dawson commands the screen as part of the cast in the role of the former Jedi padawan. Two episodes premiered on Tuesday, August 22nd, and with everything from Syndulla to the Eye of Sion demanding discussion from fans online, there has been so much discourse surrounding the new episodes already.

However, there is so much intricate detail packed into the installments that you may have missed out on some of them, especially this one.

In Ahsoka Part Two: Toil And Trouble, we open on Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, who looks up into the skies just before the series’ title card presents itself. It’s a genuine ‘blink and you’ll miss it moment’ that’s on the screen for just a second, but shrouded in the clouds you can see the outline of none other than a purrgil.

The moment occurs at the 05:22 mark, and although many will miss it, some eagle-eyed fans have been quick to notify others.

“Seen a few people mentioning the purrgil on the star chart in Ahsoka episode 2,” one viewer tweeted, “but I haven’t seen any mention of what looks like a purrgil in the clouds of Seatos. Am I the only one seeing this?”

“Completely missed this purrgil cameo,” another wrote after seeing it.

For those unfamiliar, the purrgil are a species of space whale that roam the galaxy, tunneling through hyperspace. They travel through space to reach worlds that offer a rich source of Clouzon-36, a gas that they consume as nourishment. Due to the species’ unawareness of ships traveling at immense speeds, they can be considered a danger and a hazard to aircraft. They range in size too, with the largest of them being part of a sub-species called ‘Purrgil Extra’.

It’s amazing to see them teased so early on in Ashoka, and we hope to see the species make a more substantial appearance in a later episode, which we predict to be the case.

Looking at the purrgil’s history in Star Wars, they were mentioned first in The High Republic: Quest for the Hidden City, and were later references in the live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi series in the very first episode.

However, their first appearance was in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, debuting in “The Call”. They appeared in multiple episodes after that but didn’t feature in live-action until The Mandalorian season 3. They appear when Grogu spies a group of them.

Keeping the purrgil a fascinating part of the franchise’s canon, you’ll want to keep an eye out for them as Ahsoka continues.

Ahsoka is streaming exclusively on Disney+.
