The Day of the Dead is a day when the living and the deceased are reunited. The Day of the Dead is believed to be the only time in a year that the boundary between the spirit worlds and the real world is dissolved. The spirits of the deceased visit their loved ones.
Family members create ofrendas (offerings), to remember their loved ones who have died. They are believed to encourage visits by the land of the dead.
Bright yellow marigold flowers, photos and lights of the departed are common decorations for altars. Families also make the most beloved foods and beverages of the person being honored.
