She recalled her recent trip to Rwanda where she witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of a lack in reproductive rights on children.
“One 14-year-old girl, already a mother of twins, talked to me while trying to wrangle her two boys. There was a hopelessness in her voice. ‘This is our only community,’ she said,” Phoebe recalled.
She thought that showing Americans pre-Roe would help to show why the piece was important was her belief during her visit. However, she soon realized that she was wrong.
She continued: “The problem was never that we didn’t share enough compelling stories or appalling statistics. One more viral Gloria Steinem or RBG quote wouldn’t have saved Roe. This wasn’t about persuasion at all. It was about power. The wrong six people were in positions of authority. And they are why women lost the right to choose.”
Phoebe continued by saying that the recent decision had given her a renewed passion for fighting for what is right.
“I’m only 19 years old, and I don’t know where life will take me, especially not decades from now. But I am sure of this: Wherever I end up, I’ll still be working to ensure that no woman–in America, or in any country–ends up in a room like the one where I met those 52 teen girls in Rwanda.”

Who are Phoebe Gates’ siblings?
The couple had three children before Bill and Melinda got divorced.
Phoebe is the sister of Jennifer Gates, 26 and Rory Gates 23, respectively.
Jennifer is currently a medical student. She posts often about her love of horses and life to Instagram, where she has over 520,000 followers.
In 2021, she married Nayel Nassar a professional equestrian.
Rory, however, prefers to be quieter and live in the shadows.
