The Wonder was shot in what location? Explore locations used for Irish filming

Since its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival back in September, there has been plenty of buzz surrounding Netflix’s latest film, The Wonder.

Part of the excitement surrounding this period drama is its production values. As the filmmakers attempt to transport viewers back to 1939, they aim to capture the essence of filmmaking.^Th-century Ireland.

Where exactly was The Wonder shot and which locations were used for bringing the period setting to life?

The Wonder premiered on Netflix on Wednesday 16 November 2022. It was the result of several film festivals screenings and a limited cinema release.

The film is based on Emma Donoghue’s novel. It follows Lib Wright, an English nurse who has been sent to a rural Irish village in 1862 Ireland. She has been assigned the task of watching a young girl who hasn’t eaten for four months.

Lib can’t quite grasp how the fasting girl is still alive and word of her incredible feat quickly spreads, attracting tourists and pilgrims who believe the child could be a saint.

However, more details about the girl are revealed and it seems that there is something more sinister at work.

Is there a film set of The Wonder?

The Wonder was filmed in Ireland, specifically in Dublin and the idyllic countryside of County Wicklow.

The filming began in August 2021, and lasted for several weeks before production was completed in September.

Many of the film’s indoor scenes were filmed on studio sets built in a huge aircraft hangar at Dublin’s Weston Airport.

Strangely enough, the film shows this by showing fans the sets of the studio before the camera pans to the actors performing.

The Wonder’s rural outdoor scenes, meanwhile, were filmed in County Wicklow, which is located to the south of Dublin.

Filming was primarily done in and around Hollywood, which is not to be confused for the California home of American filmmaking.

On top of that, a modern café in the village of Redcross was converted to become Ryan’s Spirit Grocery, the establishment where Lib stays during her visit.

And finally, more shooting took place at Sally Gap in County Wicklow where the O’Donnell house set was built in full to allow for 360-degree filming.

‘A different kind of Hollywood’

Hollywood is an Irish village that has a history going back at least six centuries.^Thsecol, because it is linked to Saint Kevin who lived at that time in County Wicklow.

Pilgrims are said to have passed through the village and followed in Saint Kevin’s footsteps to the nearby settlement of Glendalough.

The 2002 census revealed that the village of Hollywood had a population of fewer than 100 people.

Despite the village’s small size, it has proved popular with filmmakers and apart from featuring in The Wonder, Hollywood has also played host to 2004’s King Arthur, Dancing At Lughnasa, the Liam Neeson-starring Michael Collins, and the TV series Vikings.

The Hollywood Sign is also used by the Irish village. It overlooks the hamlet, just like the Hollywood Sign in California.

Florence Pugh posted an image of the sign to Instagram while filming the crew. She captioned it: “Less traffic, greener hills, great Guinness. A different kind of Hollywood.. 💚🍀”
