RISHI SUNAK has won the Tory leadership elections, which means he will soon be the next Prime Minister.
Penny Mordaunt was the last person to reach the threshold for the leadership race after he failed to secure 100 MP backers.
After Liz Truss’ resignation last week, it was a fast race to take her place. He will do so in just hours.
Here are some things we expect to see in the next hours and days as former Chancellor takes over the top political post.
Rishi address
At 14.30, today in Parliament, the new Tory leader/PM to be will address party members.
He will thank his supporters and promise to unite the party for good.
Liz Truss officially resigns
Because Ms Truss still holds the constitutional title of PM, she will have first to officially resign.
According to reports, the King will be returning to London on Monday night from Sandringham, which would mean that the swap will likely occur on Tuesday morning.
Resignation Statement
As she leaves No10, the outgoing PM might make a short statement.
Ms. Truss will end her brief time in office by twirling the podium one last time.
The King’s Meeting
Following Ms Truss’s formal resignation, Rishi will be invited by the King into the Palace to form a new government.
They will pose together for a photo, and Charles might capture their entrance on camera.
After a brief chat, the PM will return to No10 as PM.
Going into No10
New PMs often pose for photos outside the No10 entrance on their way in.
Rishi’s wife Akshata and their two daughters might join them for a smile, and for a quick wave for the camera.
The couple will be welcomed at Downing Street by an entourage made up of staff and officials who are ready to show them around.
All the details of the previous administration will be quickly cleared by civil servants who are working behind the scenes.
First speech
The chances are that the new PM will address the country from No10.
In an effort to calm the nation following a turbulent and chaotic time in Westminster, he will likely make a brief speech outside Downing Street.
Cabinet reshuffle
It will then be straight to work, Mr Sunak’s top team.
A number of staff and officials will be waiting for him to enter No10
Together, they will begin to work on appointing the top Cabinet team. It is likely to consist of some staunch allies and some Boris or Penny backers in an attempt to unify the party.
PMQs
Rishi is likely to attend his first PMQs session at the House of Commons Wednesday.
Ms Truss expected to do so. This means she won’t be able to attend her final session and say goodbye to MPs.
This means that the new PM will not have much time to prepare for Sir Keir Starmer’s challenge.
Mini-Budget?
One of the first decisions that the new PM will have is whether or not to proceed with the 31 October statement.
No10 earlier said that they were preparing to it “should”It was decided by the new PM to have it that day.
He may, however, push it back to review the whole package to decide if he wants it to continue or if he prefers to pursue other policies.
