Oliver Finley reached for his journal from his bedside drawer. He opened the pages and found a photo. He smiled as he looked through it.

“Ah, those were the days. Perhaps now is the right time…”He told himself that. Then he got up from his desk, took off his glasses and called each of his friends one at a time.

Oliver had not seen his friends in many years. He felt it would be nice for them to meet up at V-E Day. Although they had many precious memories together in the army, each one was so busy with their lives that they rarely had time for them to get together.

Oliver saw V-E Day approaching and decided to organise a get-together. His calls were returned by most of his friends who informed him they would be there.

Oliver was still waiting anxiously for the V-E Day to arrive, and was found sitting on the couch in the living-room, looking at the front doors. “Will they show up? I hope they don’t forget what they promised.”

Oliver felt very alone after the death of his wife to cancer three-years ago. Tristan, Oliver’s son, was there for him, but Oliver still needed company. We can all feel lonely even if we don’t really feel alone.

Oliver was devastated that evening when his friends failed to arrive at the meeting. He was anxious that they wouldn’t make it. His friends were there on his front porch, just as the doorbell rang.

“Oh, you guys finally made it!”Oliver gave everyone a hug. Oliver greeted everyone with a hug. He then led them inside and made them a quick glass of water. Then they sat down in their living room, reminiscing on their past and discussing their children’s accomplishments.

“My son recently got into masters at NYU,”Jack stated, “Who had been their team leader through the entire battle?” “I am really proud of him. He’s going to make a name for himself very soon. He even insisted on moving out, and he’s managing everything by himself….”

Oliver smiled. “That’s incredible. He was always a diligent kid. Remember how he used to send us all letters when we couldn’t be there on his birthday? Oh, he’s also been a very thoughtful child…”

“How come you’re dressed like that? Why don’t you tell him something and forbid him from doing that, Oliver?”

Jack smiled proudly. “Well, it all comes from his father,”He said it, and everyone laughed.

“What about your son, Oliver?”Anthony, Anthony’s friend, asked. “I heard he was doing a degree in Arts the last time we spoke. What does he plan to do after that?”

“Oh!”Oliver laughed. “My son has his way of doing things. He’s doing pretty decent for people his age, and he recently bagged a gig with a major publisher, so yeah, he’s been busy with that.”

“That’s wonderful!”Victor said. “We would love to meet him and congratulate him!”

“Of course, you can! He wants to be near his father, so he hasn’t moved out yet. Let me call him…Tristan,”Oliver called out. “Could you please come here for a few minutes? I want you to meet some people!”

But Tristan didn’t respond. “I’m sorry,” Oliver apologized. “He must be preoccupied with something. I’ll be right back…”Oliver rose from his chair to go to Tristan’s bedroom. The young boy was already in the living room.

Oliver’s friends saw Tristan and their jaws dropped. They exchanged furtive glances. Tristan was dressed in stunning red with gorgeous makeup and cherry lips, much to their delight. No one expected Tristan would be dressed in that way.

“I was getting ready for the party, dad. My friends will be here soon,”He stated.

“Oh, no problem. I just wanted you to meet my friends. We served together in the army back in the war days. Everyone meet my wonderful son,”Oliver introduced him. “My son, Tristan!!”

Tristan smiled. “Hi, everyone. It’s nice to meet you. I’m….”Oliver was interrupted by his friends who began to throw sexist questions at Oliver before he could finish.

“How come you’re dressed like that? Why don’t you tell him something and forbid him from doing that, Oliver?”Anthony stated it blatantly.

Oliver’s friends had an extremely negative reaction to the boy. They expected the same reaction from Oliver. But he stood by Tristan.

“Forbid? But why?”Oliver responded.

“He’s a boy. Why would he dress like that? That’s just out of the norm….”Jack pointed it out.

Oliver sighed and shook the head. “When did we start judging people based on their appearances, Jack? Is my son a suddenly different person to us because he chose to wear a dress? I don’t think so. When he recently came out to me, instead of criticizing him, I admired his honesty, and I believe that’s what parents are supposed to do,”He stopped. “Today happens to be a special day to me for another reason as well. Tristan’s friends are celebrating his coming out with a party, and I think my child looks fantastic! I’m not sure what’s wrong….”

Tristan’s friends arrived soon after and he had no choice but to leave. “Have a good time, Tristan,”Oliver said it to him.

“You too, dad. Bye, everyone, and yeah, I am very proud to have a father like my dad. I sincerely hope you come to appreciate me for who I am rather than judging me for what I wear. Anyway, it was lovely meeting you all….”

Oliver smiled proudly at his son’s decision. Oliver’s friends regretted what they said. They were impressed by Tristan’s manners and civility. Oliver had also given him a good upbringing.

“It’s okay if you disagree with my son’s decisions, gentlemen,”Oliver said these words as he returned his son to him. “After all, we all have the right to express ourselves. But I am extremely proud of my son, and I love him….”

“We understand, Oliver,”Jack said it, realizing his error. “You’ve raised your son well. We apologize for how we behaved….”

Oliver excused them, and the two spent the rest the evening talking and having a great time. They enjoyed the delicious dinner Oliver and Tristan prepared for them later.

“I must say, your son is a fantastic cook, Oliver,”Victor commented on the first spoonful Tristan made of custard for them. “The dessert is just perfect! I loved it!”Others nodded in agreement.
