Star Wars Outlaws: The Ultimate Open-World Experience

From the early moments of our demo, Star Wars Outlaws felt very liberating. It’s the first truly open-world game set in the Star Wars universe, and save for some necessary gameplay limitations, it lets you do a lot.

The Freedom of Exploration in Star Wars Outlaws

The game is full of random events you won’t find in more linear Star Wars titles like Jedi Survivor. Towards the end of the first demo we played, we had a chat with a Rodian who tipped us on a far away treasure waiting to be found. The developers told us that you can even have your own moisture farm on Tatooine and earn some cash from it.

Stealth Missions and Combat in Star Wars Outlaws

In another demo mission, we had to sneak into a fortress in snowy Kijimi City and steal a priceless relic. Making our way inside felt a lot like Assassin’s Creed stealth missions. Once in the fortress, it was a mix of stealth and action featuring both melee combat and cover shooting. You can even snatch weapons from downed enemies, but you will then drop them as soon as they run out of ammo.

Exploring the Open World and High-Speed Spacefights

After completing the mission and getting out of the fortress, we once again caught a glimpse of the open world. On the minimap we saw icons for a blacksmith, cantina, and clothes shop, but these were locked in the demo. The open-world structure is Star Wars Outlaws’ biggest selling point, so it was strange that it wasn’t the focus of our hands-on session. The last portion of the demo was a high-speed spacefight on your ship that felt more dynamic than Star Wars: Squadrons. You’ll be targeting enemy ships with homing missiles, and once you’re done you’ll have to get rid of your ‘wanted’ status. It comes across as a game where your actions have consequences. This last mission ended with our ship flying directly to a planet’s surface without loading screen, and only a brief landing animation.

That seemless transition made us crave more of Outlaws’ open world, which if executed rigiht, could be every Star Wars fan’s dream come true. We can’t wait to explore more when the full game launches on August 30, 2024 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
