IPHONE users have found another way to express themselves through texting. The iOS Japanese keyboard offers users extra emoticons on Apple devices.

To access the extra icons, iPhone users will need to enable the Japanese keyboard. After enabling the Japanese keyboard, iPhone users will have access to hundreds of icons.

As iDB reported, Apple has prebuilt these American Standard Code for Information Interchange faces that give iPhone and iPad users another way to express themselves through apps that support typing, such as iMessage and WhatsApp.

ENABLING THE JAPANESE KEYBOARD

  1. To enable the Japanese keyboard on your iPhone, first go to your Settings.
  2. Next, select General.
  3. Select Keyboard > Keyboards.
  4. Select Add New Keyboard.
  5. From the list of languages, choose Japanese—Kana.
  6. Select Done.

USING THE ASCII FACES

  1. Once you have added the Japanese keyboard to your iPhone, open an app that supports typing, such as iMessage or WhatsApp.
  2. Tap and hold the globe key on your current keyboard to see all your available keyboards.
  3. Select the Japanese keyboard.
  4. Select the ^_^ key next to the emoji key.
  5. The ASCII faces will appear at the top of the keyboard. Swipe left or right to view all of them. To “comfortably view” all the hidden emoji faces, select the arrow button. Scroll down to see all your options.
  6. To use a face, tap it and hit send.

According to iDB, ASCII faces can be used “in any iOS app that supports keyboard switching.” This includes common apps like iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and “several other chatting apps where sending faces are common.”

OTHER IPHONE HACKS

There are plenty of iPhone hacks that users can access in addition to the ASCII faces. Per Reader’s Digest, some other hacks and options include turning your iPhone into an activity tracker, asking Siri to flip a coin, using the hidden Caps Lock key, using your iPhone as a white-noise machine, signing documents, using your iPhone as a tape measure, using the Calculator app’s hidden backspace button, using the one-handed keyboard, tracking your health data, and using travel-planning tools.

TYPING TRICKS

Of course, there are plenty of other ways to upgrade your typing game. For instance, there’s a hidden trackpad inside your iPhone keyboard.

If you’re typing something, try holding your finger or thumb down on the space bar. This will convert your iPhone keyboard to a temporary trackpad. You can then drag your finger or thumb around on this to place your cursor exactly where you want. It can be especially useful if you’re trying to drop your cursor in the middle of a word.

Another handy hack is swipe-typing. Tapping on individual keys is how most people tap out some text. But instead, try this: go to Settings > General > Keyboard and toggle on Slide To Type. Then when you go to type something next, you can drag your finger between the letters of the word you’re trying to write. For instance, to type “chair,” you’d place your finger on the “c” and then drag it to “h,” then “a,” then “I,” and finally “r” – all without lifting. Only lift your finger once you’ve completed the word and you’re ready to move on to the next one. Once you master this skill, you’ll likely find it faster than tapping out individual letters.
