“Malawi Vice President Dies in Tragic Plane Crash: Air Disaster Claims 10 Lives”

Tragic Plane Crash Claims Malawi’s Vice President and Nine Others

Malawi’s vice president, Dr Saulos Chilima, tragically lost his life in a devastating plane crash that also claimed the lives of nine other individuals after their military jet crashed into a mountainous forest. The incident unfolded when the plane failed to land at Mzuzu International Airport, prompting a massive search operation. The aircraft, which was supposed to arrive 45 minutes after departing from Lilongwe, took off with former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri and a group of individuals onboard.

Failed Landing Attempt Amidst Bad Weather

As the jet approached the airport, air traffic control advised the pilot against attempting a landing due to adverse weather conditions. The pilot was instructed to turn back, but shortly after, the aircraft vanished from radar screens. Search teams worked tirelessly to locate the wreckage in the Chikangawa forest, ultimately confirming the tragic fate of all ten occupants.

National Mourning Declared for Victims

The President’s office officially announced the demise of Vice President Chilima and the other passengers following the discovery of the crash site. A national day of mourning was declared, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast until the day of the funeral. Among the passengers was ex-President Bakili Muluzi’s former wife, Shanil Dzimbiri, and three military crew members responsible for piloting the aircraft.

Political Legacy and Legal Controversies

Vice President Chilima, who assumed office in 2020, had a significant political history, particularly in the aftermath of the 2019 Malawian presidential election. Despite finishing third in the polls, the election results were annulled over irregularities, culminating in a historic rerun where Chilima served as Vice President Lazarus Chakwera’s running mate. Their victory marked the first instance in Africa where a court-overturned election result led to the sitting president’s defeat.

Accusations of corruption had previously plagued Chilima, alleging his involvement in influencing government contract awards in exchange for monetary benefits. While facing charges, the case was dropped by prosecutors, sparking criticisms over the administration’s anti-graft efforts. Despite his legal troubles, Chilima, a vocal proponent of reform and transparency, consistently denied any wrongdoing.

In late 2022, the vice president was arrested and had made several court appearances, although his trial had not yet commenced. The unfortunate crash ultimately cut short a tumultuous chapter in Chilima’s political career, leaving behind a complicated legacy marred by legal battles and unresolved controversies.
