The Summer I Turned Pretty's Beyoncé needle drop has 'BellyJere' fans set on endgame

Season finales can be an emotional experience. You’re so excited to see how they temporarily round things up, and the penultimate episode usually sets up the height of the season’s drama. It also means that there will be no new episodes for several months or, worse still, years.

The Summer I Turned Pretty’s fans were gripped by tension as they awaited episode 8. How could Conrad not feel the same way after witnessing Belly and Jeremiah share a passionate embrace? Jenny Han’s Amazon Prime Video coming-of-age series returned for the season 2 finale to bring the fandom some essential August emotions. On the whole, the season has been championed by viewers, although the Team Jeremiah and Team Conrad shippers couldn’t be more divided than they are now, and one of the reasons that the finale resonated and struck such a chord is the soundtrack.

Sure, it’s been terrific all season, but the finale had such exquisite needle drops as How To Disappear by Lana Del Rey, both Bigger Than The Whole Sky & Exile (feat Bon Iver) by Taylor Swift, and then there was also perfect moments soundtracked to Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, and more.

That being said, the standout musical moment of not just the finale but the whole season is sure to Xo by Beyoncé for so many. The song is the tenth track on the icon’s self-titled 2014 album, and the song’s lyrics proved to be the perfect accompaniment to Belly and Jeremiah embracing.

“They got Xo as a f***ing song and you want me to not root for them?” one fan asked on Twitter.

“Baby love me lights out, Belly Jere Xo kiss we love you,” another similarly shared in reaction to the memorable moment. Some people have gone into greater detail about the importance of the song in the memorable moment.

“Xo being a song about appreciating the love you feel in the present because no one knows what happens in the future,” one fan began, “and Jeremiah being Belly’s unexpected love in the future oh they’re real for this.”

BellyJere’s fandom has been out in force, showing their support for the event. “This is my endgame, this is my finale,” another fan voiced, and they’re certainly in good company.

“Beyoncé made this song for them she told me,” one also joked in reply to one of the endgame tweets. If you hadn’t heard the song before, then perhaps you could be fooled about that.

Here’s to many more great musical moments to come too because The Summer I Turned Pretty has been officially renewed for season 3. Although, as fans of Jenny’s original trilogy of novels will know, there’s plenty more heartbreak on the horizon before either Jeremiah or Conrad fans know for sure who Belly will be with.

Amazon Prime Video is now offering The Summer I Turned Pretty, season 2, for streaming.
