It was a night to remember from the off for Ted Lasso and The Crown at the Emmy Awards as they clinched multiple gongs on Sunday.

Jason Sudeikis (star and co-creator the Ted Lasso) was awarded the prize for best comedy actor at the 73rd Annual Emmy Awards.

Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Brett Goldstein were recognized for their roles as club owners and star players in the hit series. The story follows a small-time American coach who is hired by an English professional football team despite not having any previous experience.

When he accepted his award, Jason said: “This show is about family. This show’s about mentors and teachers and this show’s about teammates. And I wouldn’t be here without those three things in my life.”

While the series was winning numerous awards, it did miss out on the comedy writing and directing gong to Hacks – a series about a fading stand-up female comedian played by Jean Smart. The Emmy award for best comedy actress was a standing ovation.

And Lucia Aniello’s win for outstanding directing for a comedy series helped make history after Sunday’s awards marked the first ever time women have swept both comedy and drama directing categories in the same year.

Jessica Hobbs, from The Crown, was awarded the prize in the drama category.

Ted Lasso’s early wins allowed the show to win one of the top prizes – best comedy series – at end of ceremony. After winning over audiences with its optimism during the dark days caused by the coronavirus epidemic, the show was able to bag the best comedy category prize.

The Crown also took home the best drama series Emmy after a season-gripping focus on the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Supporting stars had already received wins on the show. Gillian Anderson’s portrayal as former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and Tobias Menzies acting as the late Prince Philip were both acknowledged.

Olivia Colman was also awarded the Outstanding Lead Actress Award in Drama Series. This award went to Emma Corrin.

Peter Morgan, the show’s creator, said in London: “We’re all thrilled. I am very proud. I’m very grateful. We’re going to party.”

Elsewhere at the star-studded event, Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters won for supporting roles as a housewife and detective in Mare of Easttown in the closely contested limited series category.
