Sun Lounger Wars: Tourists Slammed for Rude Techniques

As holidaymakers head abroad this summer, the age-old problem of sun lounger battles has once again reared its head at hotel resorts. Brits on vacation are often guilty of trying to “hog” sun loungers, with some even going to extremes by arriving as early as 6am to reserve a prime spot.

Sun Lounger Reserving: A Selfish Act

Recently, a group of tourists faced backlash for their sun lounger reservation antics at a popular resort. Tourist Paul Hitchcock, a frequent visitor to Benidorm, publicly criticized a group for stacking up multiple deckchairs and then occupying all of them. The image shared on social media depicted two tourists sprawled across at least three deckchairs each, which were stacked on top of one another and covered with towels.

According to Olive Press, Paul expressed his dismay by stating: “Two people, five sunbeds, and they are not the only ones.”

Backlash and Embarrassment

Their actions were quickly labeled as “selfish” and “out of order” by observers, prompting many to voice their disapproval and call for action. One individual commented, “This behavior should not be tolerated, it is embarrassing.”

Interestingly, a similar incident occurred not long ago when two British tourists were ejected from their sun loungers by security personnel for attempting to claim them too early in the morning. The pair had allegedly tried to reserve two sunbeds at 8:40am, in violation of the hotel’s regulations.

Enforcing Lounger Rules

At the Melia hotel, pool access is only allowed from 9am onwards, requiring guests to queue up before then. A video capturing the incident shows a security guard denying access to the early birds and directing them to the back of the growing line.

Recalling a previous episode, a family from Germany received compensation of nearly £300 after complaining about the lack of available sun loungers at their Greek hotel. Despite rules prohibiting lounger hogging, the family claimed that enforcement was lacking.

Early Lounger Tactics Spark Controversy

During the summer season, the debate around sun lounger tactics intensifies, with some individuals resorting to waking up as early as 5am to secure desirable spots. Kenzo Neilson, who shared his strategy on TikTok while in Turkey, boasted about seizing the best loungers before dawn, igniting mixed reactions.

This ongoing battle for sun loungers highlights the competitive nature of resort amenities and the lengths some guests will go to for a prime poolside location.
