After a late-night robbery, he was arrested. It took place outside his Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, home.

Tompkinson, who denies the charge, has also appeared in TV’s Wild at Heart and Ballykissangel, and the hit movie Brassed Off.

Stephen, Telly’s favourite, faces a GBH conviction that could land him a maximum five year sentence in jail.

According to some reports, the victim suffered a double skull fracture that rendered him unable to work.

Prosecutors claim Tompkinson “unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm”.

Tompkinson appeared before North Tyneside magistrates’ court earlier this month where he pleaded not guilty.

The seriousness of the charge required that the case be sent to the crown court for trial by jury.

It happened after a late night bust-up that was reported to have occurred in May 2013 outside the Whitley Bay, North Tyneside home where the star was being held.

It is known that the victim of the crime can only recall a small part of the event.

Tompkinson is a regular on telly, appearing in a number of hits like the lead in ITV’s cop series DCI Banks. It ran for five seasons and was broadcast from 2010 to 2016.

In the early 1990s, he was a rogue reporter on the classic comedy Drop The Dead Donkey. This was his first stardom. For his role in the show, he won the British Comedy Award 1994 for best TV actor.

He became a household name as Father Peter Clifford in Ballykissangel in 1996 — the same year he helped turn Brassed Off into a cinema smash.

‘Bodily harm’

He has also appeared in many other shows, including Wild at Heart and The Manageress.

Tompkinson will star in the ITV drama The Long Shadow about Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe later this year.

He said the following when he was asked about Tynemouth’s court case. “No thank you.”

Crown Prosecution Service spokesmen confirmed that the actor appeared in front of magistrates on Wednesday, 8/10 to face “a single charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm”.

He said: “He pleaded not guilty and will next appear at Newcastle crown court on Wednesday, September 7.”

Tompkinson is originally from Stockton-on-Tees on Teesside. He recently starred as Frank Bryant in a stage version of Educating Rita opposite Jess Johnson (41).
