Stranger Mocks Mum’s Baby Name, Urges Her to Change It

Unwanted Criticism Over Baby Names: Amanda’s Experience

Every mum wants the perfect name for their little one, with some opting for unusual spellings or monikers that belong to loved ones. One mum has revealed that she had a stranger laugh in her face over her little one’s name – and they even urged her to change.

Amanda’s Encounter with a Cruel Stranger

While friends and family might offer their opinion, mum-of-three Amanda was stunned by this random interaction. In fact, the Aussie mum was so shocked that she even took to TikTok and recalled how she’d been going about her day when it happened. The mummy influencer told fans: “Have you ever had someone laugh at your baby’s name? Because that’s what happened to me today at the shops, which sucks.”

Unexpected Reactions to Unique Baby Names

To make matters even worse, the busy mum had decided to grab a bite to eat when it happened. Having spent age trawling the shops with her infant son, the content creator stopped for a quick bit of sushi before heading home. She’d been quietly enjoying her food when an old man approached her and took a shine to the little one, before asking what his name was. Upon hearing the tot was named Knoxie, the elderly stranger burst into fits of laughter – leaving Amanda devastated. “I understand that’s a unique name, but this man laughed straight in my face and said ‘It’s not too late to change it. You should change it’.”

Online Backlash Over Baby Names

As her video rapidly went viral, it became apparent that she wasn’t the only one who’d received unwanted opinions. Countless mums complained in the comments, with some having extremely rude strangers tell them why their child’s name was ‘wrong’. One mum revealed that her son’s swimming instructor had taken exception to his unusual name, telling others: “We took my son to his first swimming lesson the instructor said what’s his name? Hubby replied Navy instructor replied ‘What’s his sister’s name Army?’” Another admitted: “My eldest’s name is Oxley and I still get weird looks and comments whenever I tell them.

Defending Baby Names and Standing Tall

“I don’t understand people sometimes.” Even less unusual monikers were judged, with a third writing: “An elderly lady said you poor thing to my son Freddy.” As others defended Amanda baby name, one TikTok user came up with the perfect response to the elderly man. “Should have asked him what his name is and then said ‘shame your mum didn’t change yours’,” argued a fourth. However, the influencer isn’t the only mum coming under fire for their unusual baby name. In fact, one woman has broken the internet with her two-year-old’s moniker – with only 32 other children sharing it in the UK. Well, what is in a name anyway?

Banned Baby Names: What You Can’t Name Your Child

While the UK doesn’t have many rules about baby names, there are a few that have been banned. It is worth noting that parents can largely choose whatever name they want, but authorities will step in if they believe the moniker could harm the child. Names with obscenities, numerals, and misleading titles may also be rejected by the Registering Officer. Here are a few that didn’t make the cut: Cyanide, Martian, Monkey, Akuma (meaning devil), Chow Tow (meaning smelly head), Rogue.
