New York Times Hires Axios Politics Reporter Jonathan Swan

Jonathan Swan, Axios’s political reporter at the New York Times, was hired by The New York Times.

Swan will begin at the Times in January 2023, and will be covering Republicans in Congress. He will then move to the 2024 presidential campaign team during the summer.

“Today we are thrilled to tell you that Jonathan Swan, a gifted, dogged and high-impact reporter, will be joining The Times,”The Times Announcement Friday. “Jonathan, a national political reporter at Axios, is one of the biggest news breakers and best-sourced reporters in Washington.”

Swan led coverage of Donald Trump’s presidency, reporting Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the U.S. plan to depart the Paris Climate Agreement established in Paris in 2015, Steve Bannon’s firing and Paul Ryan’s retirement from Congress.

“Axios has been my home and family for six years,” Swan told Axios. “I will forever be grateful for Jim, Mike and Roy taking a chance on me and for all of my supportive colleagues.”

Axios brought him in 2016 from The Hill. The company was launched in 2017. He won an Emmy in that interview, which featured the 45th President, and his face was used as a meme.

Swan was born and raised in Sydney. In 2014, he moved to the United States. He won the Wallace Brown Young Achiever Award of Journalism at 29. He also received the 2022 White House Correspondents’ Association Aldo Beckman award for “overall excellence in White House coverage.”

Jonathan’s “Trump’s Last Stand” editorial series, which laid out the end of Trump’s time in office, rose to the top of the Apple Charts in its podcast form, garnering more than 10 million listeners.

“[W]hat makes Swan special is his heart and values,”Jim VandeHei, Axios CEO wrote in a note for staff. “He personifies Axios: high-achieving but warm, gracious, generous and a blast to be around.”
