M&S are selling festive beans on toast canapes for £5 and shoppers aren’t impressed

This is not just any rip-off. This is an M&S rip-off.

Marks & Spencer’s are famed for their elaborate party food selection – being named the UK’s most Googled supermarket for Christmas nibbles – but this time, they might have taken it a bit too far.

In the run-up to the festive season, they have taken a British comforting classic and turned it into a Christmas canape.

Enter: boujie beans on toast.

The “posh cheesy beans on toast” canapes are mini pieces of brioche bread, topped with haricot beans in a tomato sauce – AKA baked beans – with creamy Barber’s mature cheese melt and finished with Barber’s mature cheddar cheese.

And while they probably are delicious, the snacks come at a whopping cost of £5 a pack for ten bites.

The home of the legendary Colin the Caterpillar and Percy Pigs was mocked across social media after eagle-eyed shoppers spotted the snacks online.

One said: “Don’t get me wrong I love M&S food as it’s usually top tier, but I can’t think of any situation where you’d ask someone ‘would you like a mini posh beans on toast?’”

A second social media user slammed the “unnecessary” expensive canape, saying, “I’ve never seen anything more unnecessary in my life than @marksandspencer selling ‘posh’ beans on toast for FIVE POUNDS.”

Another added: “I would like to know who do M&S think is serving beans on toast as hors d’oeuvres?”

One highlighted that the upmarket food outlet was simply poshin’ it up, while another made a joke about how well Brexit is going.

Another user jestered whether the UK has officially sunk that low.

Beans on toast is a lot of things… But posh is not one.
