As the NHS begins the Omicron jabs rollout, four million Brits are eligible to book Covid boosters beginning Monday.

Online booking is open next week and invites are being sent out for vulnerable people, over-75s and health and care workers.

A total of 26million Brits will be offered an Omicron jab as an autumn booster

Public top-ups begin on September 12, and invites to over-50s will follow.

The virus cases last week fell by quarter, to the lowest level since May.

Doctors are concerned that the winter season will be harsh as people spend more time indoors, and immunity wears down.

To combat Omicron, and future variants of the disease, the vaccines have been updated.

Amanda Pritchard, CEO of NHS England, said: “We know that this winter will be challenging, with a likely resurgence in both Covid and flu for the first time ever.

“The best way to protect yourselves and your loved ones is to get the next generation Covid vaccine as well as your annual flu jab.”

The Office for National Statistics reported that Covid infection rates dropped 26% last week to 1.07 million in the UK.

It’s a third of July’s summer peak at 3.7m, which means that only one in 60 people has the bug.

Kara Steel, an ONS stats buff, stated: “The number of people with Covid-19 in England is now estimated to be under one million for the first time since early June.”

This autumn, another boost will be given to 26 million Brits.

For most people, it will be the fourth dose and for those with weak immune systems, it will be the fifth.

Next week, the first doses will be administered by vaccinators who will visit housebound and care homes.

Moderna vaccines that target Omicron specifically will provide better protection and slower transmission.

Steve Barclay, the Health Secretary, stated: “An autumn booster will top up the immunity of those most vulnerable to Covid ahead of the winter, to help us continue to live with this virus without restrictions.”
