Korea Box Office: “The Pirates” Grabs Pre-Holiday Loot

Two consecutive public holidays will be observed by most South Koreans on Monday (“Seotdal Geumeum” or New Year’s Eve) and Tuesday (Lunar New Year), meaning that the Friday to Sunday weekend was the first part of a five-day holiday season.

The national box office total for three days was $5.58million. This figure was a slight improvement over the weekend before, but it was still lower than the three weekend in January. And box office in Korea remains far behind equivalent weekends in pre-COVID times. The weekend’s upturn was hardly a reflection of a weak outlook, considering that the chart was dominated by two highly-anticipated local titles.

“The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure”According to data from Kobis, a tracking service provided by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), the Friday to Sunday haul, which was $2.68 Million, took 48% share of the theatrical box office nationwide. The film has earned $3.85 million in the five days following its Wednesday release. The action-adventure-comedy is a star-studded sequel to 2014 hit “The Pirates”This earned $54.8 million.

“Kingmaker,”A drama that depicts political machinations in late 29th century America earned $1.43million, or 36% of the national total. The initial run of five days saw it earn $1.43 million, or 36% of the nationwide total. “Kingmaker”It has now amassed $2.04 Million.

“Spider-Man”It lost its top spot for six weeks and was reduced to less than 10% of the weekend aggregate. It made $537,000, or $60.3 million cumulatively since Dec. 15, 2021.

“Sing 2”In its fourth weekend of release, it earned $330,000 in the fourth place. It now has $5.64 Million.

The third Korean title was awarded fifth place. Animation, “Hello Jadoo: The Secret of Jeju Island”The weekend earnings were $239,000 and $283,000.00 respectively, as of Thursday’s release.
