Jensen Ackles Tapped A Former Smallville Star For A Key Role on The Winchesters

It’s almost time for SupernaturalFans can return to their beloved fictional universe with the spinoff prequel series. The WinchestersThe premiere of, airs this week. Many are eager to find out what Jensen Ackles, series creator and EP, has in store for this origin story. Of course, we know by now that the show revolves around young John Winchester and Mary Campbell, the parents of the franchise’s OG protagonists, Sam and Dean Winchester. More details about the show are being revealed before its debut. In an exciting twist of events, Ackles will reunite with his fellow co-stars. Smallville alum Tom Welling for the show, and he’s going to play a key role.

The latest news about his casting The WinchestersThis was confirmed at New York Comic Con on Saturday, per TVLine. And while that’s exciting on its own, fans will be pleased to know that Welling is playing Samuel Campbell, the father of Mary and the maternal grandfather of Sam and Dean. The role of Samuel Campbell was created by Mitch Pileggi on Supernatural. He appeared in eight episodes. Samuel will also be a regular character on the spinoff series and is expected to debut in the seventh episode.

Even more exciting is the news that Tom Welling will have the opportunity to team up again with Jensen Ackles (who narrates Dean Winchester’s show). You may be familiar with Welling’s role as Clark Kent, the WB/CW superhero drama Smallville. This role was held for ten years. Ackles was a series regular during the fourth season of the show and played Jason Teague, Lana Lang’s boyfriend. I’m not sure I could’ve predicted that the two former co-stars would reunite in this manner, but it’s definitely a welcome surprise.

On SupernaturalSamuel Campbell, a seasoned hunter who has a complicated relationship to his grandsons, was introduced. Over the course of the show, Samuel was killed and eventually resurrected – only to ultimately be killed by Sam one final time. The WinchestersCampbell will continue to be portrayed as a “gruff and pragmatic”TVLine shared a description of the character with TVLine. It’s also said that as he teams up with his daughter, Mary, to save the world from dark forces, he’ll have to somehow repair his relationship with his estranged child.

The WinchestersPremieres Tuesday, October 11, at 8 p.m. ET will be part of the 2022 TV program.
