*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Inside Man*

The key message at the heart of Steven Moffat’s Inside Man is that anyone can become a murderer in the right circumstances.

It’s a belief that Stanley Tucci’s Jefferson Grieff repeats throughout the series as he knows from the first-hand experience of murdering his own wife, an act which he himself believes to be unforgivable.

While Jefferson is open to the truth of the grisly murder, Jefferson is less open to discussing the motives behind it. This has led many to wonder why Grieff murdered his wife in Inside Man.

Jefferson Grieff died after his wife was stabbed.

Inside Man’s first episode introduces us to Jefferson Grieff, who is on death row and is currently awaiting execution.

It’s quickly revealed that he has been sentenced to such a punishment for murdering his wife.

The following episodes provide more details on the murder, including that Grieff strangled his wife, then decapitated and hidden her head, so it would never be found.

Grieff is acutely aware of the terrible nature of his actions. He spends his time in prison trying to atone for his sins by working to resolve ongoing moral cases so that he can do good.

Jefferson Grieff murdered his wife, Inside Man.

Jefferson Grieff was convicted of crimes against her father and committed suicide.

Grieff never explicitly explains the reason behind his wife’s murder but there are enough clues laden throughout Inside Man that a probable theory becomes clear.

The murder of Grieff’s wife is centered on her father and Grieff’s former father-in-law, Gordon (played by Alan Williams).

Inside Man, Grieff is still level-headed until he meets Gordon. His demeanor shifts dramatically, and he becomes extremely antagonistic and hostile towards Gordon. “criminal,”Despite the fact Grieff is the murderer in prison.

However, from Grieff’s comments and hints that Gordon has a small army of people working for him, we can work out that he is the boss of a criminal organization that has carried out its own string of terrible deeds.

Like Grieff, we can make an educated guess that Jefferson either learned about Gordon’s crimes or was potentially involved in them somehow.

Gordon tried to expose Gordon, but he was unsuccessful. Gordon reached out to his daughter and convinced her that Grieff was trying bring Gordon down or was involved in a serious crime.

This led to a huge misunderstanding between Grieff’s wife and Jefferson, which eventually resulted in Jefferson strangling his wife to death.

To exact his revenge on Gordon, Grieff killed his wife and hidden her head to ensure that Gordon could never bury his daughter.

Harry Watling and Harry Watling share a common bond.

Episode 4’s final scene shows Watling and Grieff having a conversation via video call.

Grieff suggests that Watling might be able to reveal the reason he killed his wife, saying that Harry might be able to understand him since they are the same now.

Harry is adamant that the pair are nothing alike but Grieff notes how Watling’s actions in trying to shield criminal activity led to the death of his own wife.

This hints that Grieff’s involvement in or attempts to stop Gordon’s criminal activity resulted in the death of his wife, making their cases very similar indeed and why Grieff was so compelled to take on the investigation.

Inside Man can be streamed on BBC iPlayerThe UK Netflix internationally.
