Hawaii’s devastation is even more devastating because the fires started just two days earlier, on 8 August.

Causes are complicated In Hawaii, the climate has changed, resulting in drier summers, and increased fire danger. The proliferation of non native fauna is also contributing to the drying out of the area. And this week, unfortunate combination of powerful winds from a nearby hurricane and what scientists call a “flash drought” — a rapid-onset drought similar to a flash flood — sparked wildfires that quickly spread throughout Maui.

Lahaina is a particularly hard-hit town, as it was a very popular tourist attraction that had been virtually destroyed. Also, wildfires have been contained on Hawaii and Oahu. At the time of writing, 53 confirmed deaths have occurred, but authorities are warning that this number could rise. It is possible that the price will rise.

Many celebrities with ties to Hawaii have spoken out to bring attention to the crisis — including “Top Chef” alum Lee Anne Wong, who recommends that people interested in donating go to MauiUnitedway.org or the Hawaii Red Cross.
