Customers Charged Up to $2,800 For Online Kroger Grocery Purchase

A resident of Ohio became panicked after being charged almost $2,800 by Kroger for a grocery online order that should have cost only $282.

Delivering anything to your door can be expensive these days. You can take it from a customer who bought a Fanta at DoorDash.com for just $2.49, but ultimately paid more than $13 in total after tax, shipping fees and other charges.

Instacart, for example, offers grocery delivery. So many times, you’ll look at your final receipt and think to yourself that there must be a mistake. There’s no way your order could cost that much. You check the bill and realize that it is correct, but you were wrong. Everything is outrageously expensive.

One woman in Ohio learned this lesson recently. The mom claimed that her heart stopped as she saw the cost of her Kroger online grocery order.

The routine order of groceries from Kroger in Ohio turned out to be a nightmare for a mom after being charged almost $2,800.

Jill McCormick of Ohio was stunned when she found out that her grocery order from Kroger was nearly 2,800 dollars, even though it was only supposed to be 282 dollars. WCPO.

Jill claimed to have been made aware of her distressing situation when her bank informed her that a charge of more than $2,500 had exceeded her limit.

She soon discovered that she was billed for $2,783.25 in grocery charges that were not related to the items she ordered or received.

She was charged $26,94 for six packs of Butterball Turkey Bacon, $73,43 for five bottles Dawn Platinum Dish Soap and $239.85 for 15 Gain Laundry Detergent bottles.

“My heart stopped because I’m thinking panic mode,” she told the outlet. “Something is happening, and I have to react very quickly, and I didn’t even know where to start.”

Jill explained that the designated shopper was messaging her about the standard substitutes she could make for her order. However, he hadn’t spoken to her in a long time. This is when her bank informed her of the excessive charge.

Jill reached out to Kroger’s customer service team to cancel the erroneous grocery order stat, but it wasn’t such as easy fix.

“After trying for an hour, trying to get in touch with someone, they were finally able to get in touch with Instacart to cancel the order because they never canceled the order as the shopper originally told me,” Jill said.

Jill received a gift voucher of $20 and a refund which would be processed in 7-10 business days.

Ultimately, Jill noted that she wasn’t looking for a gift card, but “for a fix and outcome” to prevent incidents like this from occurring again so “someone else, another family, is not going through this.”

It’s unclear how Jill’s order went from $282 up to $2,783.25, but the Instacart customer is believed to have made extravagant changes to the order so that they could make more money.

Instacart informed the outlet via email that, while they have strict guidelines for their shoppers, these individuals are independent contractors and not employees of the company. The background check is done, however.
