COVID-19 can cause a loss of taste or smell. That almost led to disaster for one Texas family after they say their smoke alarms didn’t go off during a house fire.

Kayla and Nathan Dahl were both in recovery from COVID-19, when their 2-year old son Brandon woke them up at 4:30 AM. They couldn’t smell any, but Brandon, their 2-year-old son, could.

Their house was set ablaze by the distinctive smell of thick smoke.

“He was just kind of tapping me saying ‘mama,’ then repeating, ‘mama hot.’ And I got up and all I saw were flames coming towards our bedroom door,” Kayla said.

The little boy’s warning came just in time.

The Dahls brought their five children along and all survived. However, their Alvord house is now in complete disarray.
