Apple reports that Face ID has a very low failure rate of one in a million.

Face-unlocking technology has a downside, however: You have to use your face in order to unlock the device.

You could be forced to use Face ID by someone.

Apple provides a shortcut for disabling Face ID instantly.

You can unlock your iPhone using Face ID by holding the side button and one of the volume keys.

Keep them both pressed for two seconds.

The iPhone Lock Screen is also accessible.

You can also choose to turn off your iPhone, or display Medical ID.

As soon as you see the screen, both Face ID and Touch ID will be disabled.

You will need to enter your passcode to unlock the phone.

You’ll have to act as if you can’t recall it.

The iPhone will not unlock if someone holds it in front of their face.

Use Lock and Erase

Lock and Erase can be a useful tip if your iPhone was stolen.

You can go to the iCloud website – or the Find My app on another Apple device – and look up your stolen handset.

You can then mark the device as “lost” and lock it remotely with a password.

Apple Pay is also disabled when you do this.

It is also possible to remotely wipe the device, so that whoever has it cannot see your data.
