I think that they were both very young and figuring things out, and he did behave like a brat, but I also behaved like a brat in my 20s and I hopefully grew out of it and I think that that’s what we all do. I wouldn’t want to be defined by my worst moment in my 20s, certainly, so I don’t hold Nate as a villain actually.
People change over time. Maybe Nate wouldn’t have liked who he was with Andy if he was looking back at that time in his life today. Andy certainly didn’t know what turn her life would take while working as Miranda’s assistant. That’s why it was a bold move at the end of the comedy-drama film when Andy didn’t choose Miranda or Nate. She made the choice to choose herself and began a new chapter of her life, launching forward with her new publishing career.
It’s possible that the strongly negative opinions about Nate are a bit one-sided. Sure, it comes across that Nate doesn’t appear supportive of Andy, and he whines about her not being there enough for him. But, they seem to like each other. It’s a role we’ve seen plenty of times played by women where the man transitions to a new job or hobby and the female love interest complains. It reminds me a lot of Patrick Dempsey’s character in the school movie Freedom Writers when he couldn’t support his wife’s teaching job and refused to be her “wife.”Although characters like these serve as the obstacles in the story, it would be great for both sexes to support their partner’s career.
If you Rewatch Prada is for the Devil, You can see that Nate is not very efficient at executing his points but the message he attempts to communicate comes from a positive place. Andy is only using Miranda’s job as a steppingstone to her writing career. Her dream was to become a fashion editor’s assistant. He could see her changing from a woman who criticized fashionistas to one who became one. It’s hard for him to watch which leads to anger and frustration.
Anne Hathaway sincerely forgives Nate’s character for his behavior with her character over the course of the movie. Hopefully today, Nate is still making those delicious late-night grilled cheeses and being more supportive of his current girlfriend’s career.
