The story behind Pepsi, Where’s My Jet

Released by Netflix on November 17, 2022, Pepsi, Where’s My Jet recounts the story of John Leonard and his efforts to win a Harrier fighter jet after the drinks company offered one as a prize in a highly publicized ad campaign.

This now-famous commercial featured the drinks company offering fans ‘Pepsi Stuff,’You could win leather jackets or sunglasses by working hard enough. ‘Pepsi Points’You can buy bottles or cans of Pepsi.

Pepsi believes that the ad also offered a Harrier fighter-jet as one of its prizes. ‘price’ of seven million Pepsi Points proved the jet’s inclusion was a joke.

John Leonard, who was determined enough to challenge Pepsi to win the plane, was what Pepsi didn’t count on. He discovered a loophole within the rules and stated that PepsiPoints could be bought for real money at $10 each. With the help and support of Todd Hoffman and other investors, he sent in an $800,000 check to claim his jet.

Where is John Leonard right now?

John Leonard, now 48 years old, resides in Talkeetna (Alaska).

He is happy to have put aside the dream of owning his own jet and now works as a national parks ranger. He lives with Dottie and their two kids, a girl and a son.

Leonard remains close to Todd Hoffman, and they recently attempted Mount Vinson, Antarctica’s highest peak.

Talk to The GuardianJohn Leonard shared his experiences with people prior to the Netflix documentary’s release. He also spoke about what he would tell them if they believed that he was only challenging Pepsi to get the attention they would receive.

“Over the years I’ve been sensitive to it, because even close people have said: ‘Well, you’re an opportunist,’”Leonard explained. “Lawsuits like this end up being compared to the McDonald’s hot coffee case, the kind of ambulance-chaser thing. And that hit me wrong. Looking back on it, it was opportunistic. Absolutely. But that’s not always a negative thing. And back then I wholeheartedly thought that we were going to get the jet.”

“What I struggle with today,”He also said, “is how can I have really thought that I was going to get the jet? I’m 48 years old now, and I’m now looking back on it like: ‘what kind of dips**t were you, man?’”

Was he able ever to get his jet?

John Leonard did not win the Harrier Jet.

John tried to sue Pepsi for claims of fraud and breach of contract after the company returned the $700,000. The advert did not contain any disclaimer that suggested the offer was funny.

However, the court found in favor of Pepsi and agreed that the apparent offer of a military jet – worth $23 million at the time – was clearly not serious.

Pepsi modified the commercial after the lawsuit to raise Harrier’s price to 700 million PepsiPoints. The commercial also contained a disclaimer that clarified their position. “Just Kidding.”

Pepsi, Where’s My Jet is available to stream now on NetflixAfter releasing on November 17, 2022.
