According to a new study, HAIR loss and sexual dysfunction have been added as symptoms of long Covid.
Based on anonymised health records of over 2.4 million UK citizens, the research revealed that patients with long Covid had a greater range of symptoms.
There are two million British citizens. Estimate According to the Office for National Statistics, (ONS), long Covid is a serious condition.
NHS England currently only lists 14 Covid symptoms (including extreme tiredness or insomnia) on its website.
Researchers from the University of Birmingham suggested that Covid patients could experience 48 additional side effects 12 weeks after they have contracted the virus.
Some of the side effects are bowel incontinence, inability or inability to do familiar movements or command.
Within the StudyIn their paper Nature Medicine, the researchers identified key groups and behaviours that increase the likelihood of developing long Covid.
The researchers suggested that people younger than 50, those who are not of a mixed race, or from other ethnic groups, were more likely to have Covid for a long time after contracting the virus.
Reporting persistent symptoms was also associated with people of poorer background, smokers, overweight and obese people.
The senior author, Dr Shamil Haroon, associate clinical professor in public health at the University of Birmingham, said: “This research validates what patients have been telling clinicians and policymakers throughout the pandemic – that the symptoms of long Covid are extremely broad and cannot be fully accounted for by other factors such as lifestyle risk factors or chronic health conditions.
“The symptoms we identified should help clinicians and clinical guideline developers to improve the assessment of patients with long-term effects from Covid-19, and to subsequently consider how this symptom burden can be best managed.”
