In one of the worst season finales in history, America’s now least favorite former bachelor, Arie Luydendyk Jr., shocked his fans by proposing to not one, but two different women.
The 36-year-old former racecar driver originally appeared on Emily Maynard’s season of the Bachelorette in 2012, where he was quick to finish as the runner-up and leave with a broken heart he thought may never be repaired.
That all changed, however, when ABC announced that Luydendyk would be the next bachelor, meet 29 beautiful women and travel the world with those who were lucky enough to make it through the first few brutal rose ceremonies.
After making his way across Europe with some of the women, Luydendyk ultimately ended up in the country of Peru with finalists 29-year-old publicist Becca Kufrin and 25-year-old tech salesperson Lauren Burnham.
“I choose you today, and I choose you every day from here on out. I love you so much,” Luydendyk said to Kufrin before getting down on one knee. Her response, an overly enthusiastic “Of course!” before the pair walked off together.
Nevertheless, Kufrin left with her ring in one hand and Luydendyk in the other; Burnham left single, heartbroken and “extremely confused.” Yikes.
The happily ever after soon turned out to be short-lived after Chris Harrison, host of the reality show, announced that ABC had obtained exclusive footage of Luydendyk’s raw and emotional breakup with Kufrin during one of their secret weekend getaways.
The intense and even more awkward conversation between the two now-former lovebirds took a turn when Luydendyk announced that he still had romantic feelings for Burnham despite leaving her in the dust over a month ago. During the conversation, which all aired on “After The Final Rose,” a tearful Kufrin can be seen on camera confused and undoubtedly upset.
Despite Kufrin’s heartache, Luydendyk was quick to sweep Burham off her feet in an on-air live proposal in front of all of America. Still obviously in love with Luydendyk, Burham answered a tearful yes. Still getting over her still fresh breakup, Kufrin sat backstage and watched.
Yes, Luydendyk lied. Yes, he promised to love and “choose” Kufrin every day for the rest of his life before quickly tossing her to the side like a used toy. Yes, he and Burham are now happily engaged and moving in together. No, he does not deserve Bachelor Nations’ sympathy or support for the “difficult” decision that he made.
“This is my journey, and this is about finding a lasting love and that road is not always the easiest,” Luydendyk said. “It’s all about the ending and finding that person for yourself and that’s the important part. I’m very happy.”
While that’s great and all, it still doesn’t change the fact that Luydendyk betrayed Kufrin in front of the entire world and then forced her to watch him propose to the girl she thought she would never have to see again.
And while Kufrin’s journey to find love may seem over, it’s just, in fact, getting started, as Harrison announced that she will become the new bachelorette for the upcoming season to begin in May.
Maybe all love stories do have a happy ending, after all.
