DNA Evidence ‘Not Enough’ to Exonerate Man Who Spent 60 Years in Jail
A supposedly innocent man who spent six decades in jail for a murder has been dealt a further blow after bombshell DNA evidence that could clear him was deemed insufficient for a complete exoneration. And Chester Weger’s attorney fears the use of new forensic analysis to solve the mysterious Starved Rock murder case could also be denied.

Attorney’s Frustration Over DNA Evidence
Chicago based lawyer Andy Hale is refusing to give up hope on clearing Weger, who will be 85 this month, of any involvement in the brutal killings of three women in March 1960. The U.S. Sun revealed late last year how Hale believed new genetic genealogy testing proved a strand of hair found on one of the victims, Francis Murphy, belonged to an unnamed man from the area close to the Illinois national park. Despite this, Will County state attorney James Glasgow is refusing to accept the recent development and maintains that Weger was correctly convicted for the crimes in 1961. Hale, however, wanted to return to the lab and carry out more tests, believing that some wood found at the scene could be from a baseball bat used by the murderers to bludgeon the women to death.

The Fight for Justice Continues
Weger, who initially admitted to killing Lillian Oetting but later retracted his statement amid claims of police brutality, has been struggling to prove his innocence even after being released from prison in 2020. Hale’s requests for further testing and forensic examinations have been met with resistance from the prosecution, leading to a standstill in the quest for Weger’s exoneration.

An Uphill Battle for Innocence
Despite the DNA evidence and advancements in forensic analysis, the state attorney’s office remains skeptical about the possibility of Weger’s innocence. The refusal to accept the findings from the Othram lab in Texas and the reluctance to engage Microtrace for further testing only deepen the mystery surrounding the case. Hale, frustrated by the lack of cooperation, insists that Weger deserves a fair chance to prove his innocence and uncover the truth behind the tragic deaths.

Seeking Truth and Justice
With the potential implications of wrongful incarceration costing the state millions, the fight for justice becomes even more critical. Hale’s determination to access crucial evidence and conduct thorough forensic examinations underscores his commitment to clearing Weger’s name. As the investigation unfolds, the search for truth continues, shedding light on a case that has remained shrouded in mystery for over six decades.

Closing Thoughts
The brutal murders at Starved Rock in 1960 have left an enduring mark on the victims’ families and the community. As the quest for justice presses on, the hope for exoneration and closure lingers in the air. Weger’s journey to prove his innocence serves as a reminder of the complexities of the justice system and the unwavering dedication of those fighting for truth and justice. Amidst the legal battles and forensic examinations, one thing remains clear: the search for justice is a relentless pursuit that demands unwavering dedication and unwavering commitment.
