Stephen Sondheim was one of the greatest Broadway songwriters. He died in Roxbury (Conn) on Friday morning. He was 91.<\/p>\n

Attorney F. Richard Pappas announced his death. He described it as unexpected. Pappas announced that Sondheim and friends celebrated Thanksgiving only a day before.<\/p>\n

Sondheim\u2019s catalog includes such works as \u201cCompany\u201d (1970), \u201cFollies\u201d (1971), \u201cA Little Night Music\u201d (1973), \u201cPacific Overtures\u201d (1976), \u201cSweeney Todd\u201d (1979), \u201cMerrily We Roll Along\u201d (1981), \u201cSunday in the Park With George\u201d(1984) \u201cInto the Woods\u201d (1987).<\/p>\n

One of his most memorable songs is \u201cSend In the Clowns,\u201dFrom \u201cNight Music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Broadway was his mainstay and he was widely regarded as the greatest composer\/lyricist of all time. He was one of few theater composers to handle words and music, along with Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and Frank Loesser.<\/p>\n

As impressive as his songwriting was, were his achievements as a lyricist. He composed the lyrics. \u201cWest Side Story\u201dAnd \u201cGypsy\u201dIn the late 1950s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sondheim was the first to write his lyrics and words for the 1962 farcical 1962 comedy. \u201cA Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,\u201dIt won the Tony Award for best musical, and was in production for over two years.<\/p>\n

Overall, he wrote music and the lyrics for a dozen Broadway shows, a list which doesn\u2019t incude revues like \u201cSide by Side by Sondheim,\u201d \u201cPutting It Together,\u201dAutobiographical and biographical \u201cSondheim on Sondheim.\u201dFive of them won Tony Awards as best musicals, while six were honored for best original scores.<\/p>\n

His \u201cSunday in the Park\u201dThe 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama was awarded to him.<\/p>\n

Sondheim\u2019s show revivals were also successful. Three Tonys were won by Sondheim, including \u201cAssassins\u201dIn 2004, Off Broadway was established.<\/p>\n

Sondheim was later awarded a 1993 Kennedy Center Honors and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. He was awarded a Tony Award in 2008 for his lifetime achievements, which was followed by the renaming of Henry Miller Theater in his honour in 2010.<\/p>\n

Sondheim was also a composer of music for films, such as the score for The Sound of Music. \u201cStavisky,\u201dThis 1974 movie is about a French banker and embezzler. His song \u201cSooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)\u201d for Warren Beatty\u2019s \u201cDick Tracy\u201d1991 Academy Award. Six cast albums were nominated for Grammy Awards. \u201cSend In the Clowns\u201dIn 1975, won the Grammy for song-of-the-year.<\/p>\n
