And just like that, we have our first major contender for the best picture Academy Award<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n On Saturday night, Kenneth Branagh<\/a>‘s semi-autobiographical crowd-pleaser “Belfast<\/a>” took home the\u00a0coveted\u00a0People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival<\/a>. The film, which follows a boy (Jude Hill) and his family in tumultuous 1960s Ireland, boasts 89% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, and features an all-star cast led by Jamie Dornan<\/a>, Judi Dench<\/a>, Ciar\u00e1n Hinds\u00a0and\u00a0“Outlander” breakout Caitriona Balfe<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n In the last decade, nine\u00a0of the 10 winners of TIFF’s audience-voted top prize\u00a0have received nominations for best picture at the Oscars. Three have gone on to win, including last year’s “Nomadland.”<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n With its latest victory and warm reception at Telluride Film Festival last month, “Belfast” is now on the exact same upward trajectory as two other heartwarming best picture winners: “Slumdog Millionaire” and “The King’s Speech,” both of which also world-premiered at Telluride and clinched TIFF’s top award, before repeating at Oscar.\u00a0<\/p>\n Toronto Film Festival:<\/strong>The 6 best films for representation to add to your movie list<\/a><\/p>\n
