The proliferation of non native fauna is also contributing to the drying out of the area. And this week, unfortunate combination of powerful winds from a nearby hurricane and what scientists call a \u201cflash drought\u201d \u2014 a rapid-onset drought similar to a flash flood \u2014 sparked wildfires that quickly spread throughout Maui. <\/p>\n<p>Lahaina is a particularly hard-hit town, as it was a very popular tourist attraction that had been virtually destroyed. Also, wildfires have been contained on Hawaii and Oahu.
