The team turned to the internet to find answers.<\/p>\n<p>The unexplained holes on the seabed were found by the US\u2019s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ocean Exploration team 1.7 miles below the Atlantic Ocean&#8217;s surface.<\/p>\n<p>Although lines of holes were previously recorded in the area they are now a mystery.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation asked Facebook users for their opinions. \u201cget out those scientist hats\u201dto develop their best hypothesis of where the holes could have originated.<\/p>\n<p>In a Facebook posting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OceanExplorationResearch\/posts\/pfbid0ZPwvDUYKNw7gWQHmryxzcNVV6dMfu9QvFa17jhh3ntc8vveZeGYENz6Ya5TRav8el\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Page<\/a>It wrote: \u201cOn Saturday&#8217;s #Okeanos dive, we observed several of these sublinear sets of holes in the sediment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese holes have been previously reported from the region, but their origin remains a mystery. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile they look almost human made, the little piles of sediment around the holes make them seem like they were excavated by&#8230;something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#8217;s YOUR hypothesis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/newsletters?itm_channel=native&amp;itm_campaign=footer&amp;itm_audience=prospecting&amp;itm_content=newsletters\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up<\/a>Subscribe to the Indy100 Weekly Newsletter, a free weekly publication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The post captured people\u2019s imaginations and it gathered more than 200 comments from social media users who had varying ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Some comments were more humorous or absurd than others, while others responded more honestly with their thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>One person suggested: \u201cSome type of crab maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another one: \u201c A previously unknown crab species which hides in rectangular holes and hunts in linear packs, waiting for prey to fall into their clutches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other people suggested that they aren\u2019t holes at all, but instead, it\u2019s a cable that\u2019s been partially buried. One person suggested, \u201cLooks like subsea cable just under the sand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else joked: \u201cI would say Star Fish doing cartwheels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwordfish sharpening its bill,\u201dAnother Facebook user suggested it.<\/p>\n<p>Another jokester wrote this: \u201cI knew it all along: the Earth has a zipper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team explored the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and Azores Plateau deepwaters using a remote-operated vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Get involved in our news democracy.
