{"id":108672,"date":"2022-06-26T16:53:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-26T11:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/centralrecorder.com\/bbc-presenter-slammed-for-pro-life-phrase-after-supreme-court-ruling\/"},"modified":"2022-06-26T16:53:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-26T11:23:00","slug":"bbc-presenter-slammed-for-pro-life-phrase-after-supreme-court-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/centralrecorder.com\/bbc-presenter-slammed-for-pro-life-phrase-after-supreme-court-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC Presenter Slammed For \u2018Pro-Life\u2019 Phrase After Supreme Court Ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The BBC has been pulled into the controversy following the US Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v Wade, after one of its news presenters used a controversial term on air.<\/p>\n<p><em>Today<\/em> presenter Amol Rajan used the term \u201cpro-life\u201d twice on air to describe anti-abortion campaigners.<\/p>\n<p>During the flagship BBC radio news programme, Rajan eschewed the BBC News style guide which advises journalists to use the term \u201canti-abortion rather than pro-life\u201d in a discussion about the ruling\u2019s repercussions, and used the latter description in a discussion with the BBC\u2019s North America editor Sarah Smith:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you say, Sarah, this is not the end but the end of the beginning. Because for the pro-life groups, for the pro-life coalition, who have been campaigning for this for many, many years, since Roe v Wade\u00a0actually, they\u2019re very ambitious, aren\u2019t they, there\u2019s a lot more that they want to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second time came during an interview with a North Dakota-based clinician, when he said: \u201cThe argument from the pro-life organisations is that life is life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Barham-Brown deputy leader of the UK\u2019s Women\u2019s Equality Party, told the Guardian newspaper the use of \u201cpro-life\u201d was disappointing: \u201cAnti-choice campaigners have long tried to hide behind the facade of being \u2018pro-life\u2019 when the reality is that they are anything but \u2013 they are really trying to restrict women\u2019s freedoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This criticism comes just a day after another BBC presenter, Sophie Long who fronts Radio 4\u2019s <em>The World Tonight<\/em>, was criticised for using the phrase \u201cpregnant people\u201d during her programme\u2019s coverage of the Supreme Court ruling, and the enactment in Arkansas of a near-total ban on terminations.<\/p>\n<p>Long was quoting the National Abortion Federation when she reported them saying, \u201cKnowing how many women and pregnant people would now not be able to get care was \u201cdevastating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The BBC later amended the report on its website.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The BBC has been pulled into the controversy following the US Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v Wade, after one of its news presenters used a controversial term on air.
