While everyone from network executives to longtime fans to the actors themselves seem very interested in <u>keeping the hit medical drama going<\/u>, series star Ellen Pompeo has made it known for a while now that she\u2019s ready to leave when the time comes. It\u2019s even apparently reached the point where the Meredith Grey actress, who also serves as executive producer, has had conversations about whether or not <u><em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em><\/u><u> could outlive her<\/u>. At least one of her former co-stars, however, doesn\u2019t seem optimistic about that idea.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Williams played Jackson Avery on the ABC hit for 12 seasons before <u>exiting in Season 17<\/u>. He made a guest appearance in the <u>Season 18 finale<\/u>, however, making fans very happy with the reveal that <u>Jackson had reunited with April Kepner<\/u> (played by fellow returning star Sarah Drew). Fans might not be quite as thrilled with his take on <em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>\u2019s chances of survival in the event that Ellen Pompeo decides to walk away. Acknowledging his lack of say-so in the situation, he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessonline.com\/videos\/jesse-williams-says-greys-anatomy-surviving-without-ellen-pompeo-would-be-unlikely\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.accessonline.com\/videos\/jesse-williams-says-greys-anatomy-surviving-without-ellen-pompeo-would-be-unlikely\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Access Hollywood<\/u><\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know, it would be a different show. She&#8217;s the heart of that show. She&#8217;s Grey. So, unlikely. But again, I don&#8217;t work there anymore. So it doesn&#8217;t matter what I think.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"><\/aside>\n<p>It seems Jesse Williams has similar views to those of Jackson, who in the season finale confronted Meredith over her decision to accept a new job in Minnesota. She pointed out that if he was able to leave for new opportunities; why couldn\u2019t she? Jackson responded by saying she couldn\u2019t leave because her name was on the hospital. Wow, that\u2019s not meta at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The actor\u2019s opinions weren\u2019t as strong as his character\u2019s, however \u2014 he pointed out that his opinion doesn\u2019t really count \u2014 but he sounds doubtful about the chances that <em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> would be able to carry on long-term without its namesake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jackson Avery noting that the hospital bared her name \u2014 her sister\u2019s name, actually, as Meredith pointed out \u2014 it wasn\u2019t the first time the star surgeon\u2019s story seemed a little \u201cart imitating life.\u201d In the episode \u201cShould I Stay or Should I Go,\u201d <u>Meredith went on a rant<\/u> asking why it was considered disloyal that she wanted to leave Seattle, despite everything she\u2019d done for the hospital over the course of her career. She argued that she&#8217;d earned the right to leave after working so hard for so many years.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen Pompeo has been <u>discussing the end of <\/u><u><em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em><\/u> for years now, and in December 2021 she said she\u2019d been trying to \u201cconvince everybody that it should end.\u201d Her passion to continue to tell good stories and do right by the characters is unquestioned, but she\u2019s expressed concern about recycling storylines after <u>being on the show \u201ctoo long\u201d<\/u> \u2014 though showrunner <u>Krista Vernoff has explained why she doesn\u2019t think that\u2019s an issue<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>As we wait for any updates regarding how many more seasons we can expect, fans can relive all the drama on streaming.
