“Euphoria”

Sunday, January 9th at 9 p.m. HBO

The long wait is over. Thank you, God. The first season of HBO’s breakout teen drama ended way back in August 2019, and while there were two self-contained “specials”This episode aired during quarantine. The second and final installments aired almost a whole year ago. This is a long time without the talented cast of young performers (led mostly by Zendaya, Maude, Hunter Schafer, Barbie Ferreira, and Sydney Sweeney), energetic camerawork and direction, as well as a soundtrack that makes one feel both very old and very cool. The plot details for the new season of TV are not available, but it seems there will be some new characters, some love triangles, and a fair amount of angst. Quite frankly, there isn’t anything else like “Euphoria”On TV, making its return positively, well, euphoric. [TRAILER]

“The Tragedy of Macbeth”

Friday, January 14, Apple TV+

Joel Coen, of the prolific filmmaking team Coen Brothers, directs by himself for the first time and finds suitably grand source material: William Shakespeare’s immortal “Macbeth.”The film was shot in black-and white in a very boxy aspect ratio, which adds to its haunting quality. Denzel Washington stars as Macbeth, Frances McDormand plays Lady Macbeth and Corey Hawkins portrays Macduff. Brendan Gleeson is King Duncan. However, Kathryn Hunter may sneak away as one of the three witches, which Coen vividly brings to life. “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” a coproduction of Apple and indie movie juggernaut A24Joel Coen, of the prolific filmmaking team Coen Brothers, directs solo for the first time and finds suitably grand source material: William Shakespeare’s immortal “Macbeth.”The film was shot in black-and white in a very boxy aspect ratio, which adds to its haunting quality. Diego the Last Goodbye

“Diego, the Last Goodbye”

Thursday, January 13th, HBO Max

Diego Maradona, a legendary figure in professional soccer, is also one of the most controversial. He is an Argentinian phenom, widely considered to be one of the greatest players ever. However, he struggled with substance abuse on the field and was banned twice during his career. His financial situation was similar. This documentary was released today. “Diego, the Last Goodbye” (directed by Sebastián Alfie) documents his last year of life (which, spoiler alert, was just as tumultuous as any of his other years) and the attempts to give him a proper farewell in the midst of a global pandemic. This one has the potential to make you cry. [TRAILER]

Betty White died shortly before reaching 100.ThBirthday, it seems like a good time to revisit the beautiful words of Betty White about death. It was the most secret her mother had ever described, she said. We know so much about the earth and the ocean and outer space, but we still don’t know what happens when we pass. Her mother would tell her daughter, “When someone moves on, she would say.” “Now they know the secret.”Betty White is now aware of the secret after she died just days before her 100th Birthday. There is no better way to honor Betty White than by binging on her most memorable, sharpest and most unforgettable performance. “The Golden Girls,”This series aired seven seasons and won two Emmys. It’s just as good as it was in 1986, with or without an accompanying slice of cheesecake. White’s character, Rose, was strikingly emphatic (first as a counselor and later as a kind of investigative TV journalist) and used to tackle serious subject matters (from AIDS to molestation to LGBTQ issues – all truly revolutionary stuff at the time). In the years after the show, we learned Bea Arthur didn’t really like White, and occasional tensions with other cast members arose, but none of that behind-the-scenes drama tarnishes how much “The Golden Girls” still glitters. Perhaps even more now. [WATCH]

“The Righteous Gemstones”

Sunday, January 9th at 8 PM, HBO

Praise the Lord “The Righteous Gemstones”The first season has been aired again. Its last episode aired in October 2019. Now, we have a second chance for the absurd comedy about a dysfunctional Southern couple that runs a corrupt mega-church. “Eastbound and Down”/”Vice Principals” team of Danny McBride, Jody Hill and David Gordon Green. Truly, we’re blessed. “The Righteous Gemstones,” which stars McBride, John Goodman, Adam DeVine, Edi Patterson and Walton Goggins, isn’t for everybody. It is for those who love its unique brand of humor (razor-barbed humor wrapped in extreme silliness), but they will be the first to admit that. “The Righteous Gemstones”This is a blessing. [TRAILER]

“Naomi”

Tuesday, January 11, 2009 at 9 p.m.

“Naomi” is the latest in the CW’s ever-growing stable of DC-based superhero series. What makes “Naomi”The subject matter and pedigree of this comic book character, Jamal Campbell and Brian Michael Bendis David F. Walker (based on Jamal Campbell’s comic book character), are what make it different. Naomi (Kaciwalfall) is a young Black girl that discovers she has superpowers just like her favorite heroes. It feels unique and special because of how long-in the-tooth some other CW heroes get. (It should be noted that the comic book mythology is needlessly convoluted and it’s unclear how much the show will retain.) Also, “Naomi”Ava DuVernay was the famous director of “Selma” “A Wrinkle in Time,”He also co-wrote the episode’s first episode. Hopefully DuVernay’s artistic sensibilities and the show’s progressive plot will help it stand out from other superhero fare. [PREVIEW]

Abe Forsythe is the Australian writer-director behind Zombie Comedy “Little Monsters,”This time, he’s back with a new monstrous mystery-drama. Josh Gad plays a widower who falls for a mysterious woman (played here by Isla Fischer), whose demons may be more literal than he realized. The moody trailer promises just as much heartfelt drama as suspense, and the show’s Australian production/setting should also help set it apart. All six episodes were directed by Forsythe, and all premiere at the same moment. It is time to feast. [TRAILER]

franchises is headed straight-to-streaming. (All three of Sony’s big movies last year, “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Wish Dragon,” “Vivo,”Netflix premiered the series. So it’s not a huge surprise.) Genndy Tartakovsky is the franchise’s long-time shepherd. In this new installment, a magic ray gun transforms humans into monsters, and monsters into people. This leaves Johnny (Andy Samberg), and Dracula, (Brian Hull) on dangerous missions to right the wrongs. This is a fitting and hilarious send-off of the series. It features lively animation and lots of funny gags. You’ll zing with this one. [TRAILER]
