Why Magnolia's Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines Still Dedicated To Launching TV Networks in Streaming Era

Joanna Gaines (Chip) and Joanna Gaines (Joanna Gaines) are two of TV’s most famous home-makeover stars. They have been hard at work for years and are now household names thanks to their hit show “Got Back Again”. Fixer Upper,Over the years, they have grown their Magnolia lifestyle and home brand. Now they’ve officially taken it a step further by at last bringing the cable channel Magnolia Network into the linear-verse, and the duo are clearly quite excited about launching a traditional TV network during the prime streaming era.

The pair spoke with Variety About the long road to launching Magnolia Network during the pandemic. Although Discovery+ had a lot to offer, it might not be the best idea to launch a network on linear TV. But at least according to Joanna Gaines, it’s all about connecting with the viewers of any platform.

We love being where the people are. So obviously, streaming — that’s happening. Everything changed last year, with streaming becoming the first and then moving to linear. All worked out. Now that we look back, we’re like, that’s exactly how it needed to work out. It’s because we were able to set up the streaming platform. But there’s still tens of millions of people still on the linear side. We think that many of our viewers still live on the linear side. We would love to see them there. We believe in the power to get around television together as a family, watching the same program.

It would have made sense for Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines, to have their own Discovery+ curated section or to keep the Magnolia app available for streaming audiences only. However, the Magnolia Network was created because they care more about bringing together viewers than following trends. The Gaines will not compromise their platform when it is time to bring content to viewers. The duo like doing things the old school way and for Joanna Gaines, it’s about the nostalgia:

It seems like a lot people are watching their shows on their own right now. It reminds me of six year ago, when we said yes. [creating Magnolia Journal quarterly] magazine. It was the dream we had. Everyone was saying it’s all going to digital, print is dying. We support the idea of spending an hour in your favorite chair reading a magazine and doing this kind of back to basics thing. The same applies to television. It’s weird to think of it as nostalgic, but being around the television set feels like back to the basics all over again. For us, it’s a blessing to have it both on the streaming and linear sides so that everyone can enjoy it.

It’s quite interesting that Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines decided to stick with the old-fashioned route when it came to digital options. Although they do have the Magnolia app thanks to Discovery+ the ability to have that linear side opens them up to a wider audience. They are able to attract viewers with both streaming and TV, and with the two of them, it likely won’t be hard to get people to watch.

Magnolia Network launched a long time ago, so Chip Gaines was ready to show it off. According to PeopleMagnolia’s original launch date was October 2020. The network launched then in the early 2021, before finally being launched in January 2022. The network will feature 24 lifestyle-focused shows that were handpicked and selected by the Gaines.
